Abstract

This research aims to explore the role and strength of nationalist ideology in the political contestation between Islamic parties (PPP) and nationalists (PDIP) in South Sulawesi during the 2014 Legislative Election. The research method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach through interviews and data documentation. Research findings show that each party seeks to maintain and ground its ideology through cadre programs and party schools, focusing on caring for and supporting small communities. Even though they succeeded in placing their representatives in several electoral districts, PPP and PDIP faced political dynamics that influenced the success of their ideological strategies, especially the emergence of political pragmatism among voters, which reduced the strength of ideological battles at the local level. This research provides insight into how party ideology remains relevant in local political dynamics while underscoring the challenges faced in maintaining ideological power in changing voter preferences. Therefore, political parties must continue strengthening and adapting their ideology to make it relevant to local political dynamics. In addition, efforts are needed to overcome the challenges of political pragmatism by increasing ideological awareness among voters.
